‘I, The Executioner’ Director Ryoo Seung-wan “A Film That Asks Questions Rather Than Providing Refreshing Relief”<\/h4>\n

“Rather than refreshingly punishing evil like soda, I wanted to question whether our way of dealing with evil is truly right.”<\/p>\n

Director Ryoo Seung-wan, whom we met at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul on the 11th, said this about his new work ‘I, The Executioner.’ ‘I, The Executioner,’ the sequel to the ten-million-viewer film ‘Veteran’ (2015), opens on the 13th when the Chuseok holiday begins. <\/p>\n

Detective Seo Do-cheol, played by actor Hwang Jung-min, appears as the protagonist in ‘I, The Executioner’ following the first film, but the atmosphere of the story is quite different.<\/p>

In the first film, Seo Do-cheol’s charge toward chaebols who reigned above the law evoked catharsis, but this work questions whether the sense of justice that demands punishment of wrongdoers at all costs is always right.<\/p>

Director Ryoo reflected, “In the case of the first film, several incidents that angered me became the motif,” adding “I wanted to feel the pleasure of revenge, even through a movie.”<\/p>

He continued, “After that, I was angry about certain incidents and even felt murderous intent toward people identified as perpetrators, but looking back, there were cases where they weren’t subjects to be blamed. Sometimes the perpetrator and victim were even reversed.”<\/p>

He added, “As thoughts accumulated about whether what I considered justice was truly right justice, I thought that while scratching where it itches like in the first film feels good, it might actually be the wrong prescription,” questioning “If you keep drinking soda because of indigestion, couldn’t you ruin your stomach?”<\/p>
